Most of us spend between 8 to 10 hours a day working at our computers – that’s 40 to 50 hours a week. We push ourselves, thinking that working nonstop makes us more productive. But here’s the thing: our bodies aren’t designed for endless sitting. Long hours at a desk cause your muscles to stiffen, your body gets tired, and, eventually, your productivity takes a nosedive.
So, what can you do to stay energized, keep your body moving, and boost your productivity? Here are 5 simple steps you can take throughout your day to stay in shape while working at your computer.
- Stretch It Out
Take a break and stand up! Reach both arms high above your head, as if you’re trying to touch the ceiling. Hold the stretch for 5 seconds, then repeat it 3 more times. It’s an easy way to give your body a reset and relieve tension.
- Shoulder Rolls
Tight, stiff shoulders are a common issue for desk workers. To loosen up, stand up and roll your shoulders back, one arm at a time. Do this for 5 repetitions on each side. This will help improve circulation and release built-up tension.
- Neck Stretches
Your neck can take a beating from long hours of looking at a screen. Sit up straight and gently relax your neck. Slowly touch your right ear to your right shoulder, hold for 5 seconds, then repeat on the left side. Do this stretch 3 times on each side to relieve any stiffness.
- Back Stretch
Your back takes the brunt of sitting all day. Give it a break by stretching while seated. Slowly bend your upper body forward, between your knees, and hold for 5 seconds. Sit back up and repeat this 3 more times. This stretch will help alleviate lower back discomfort and keep you feeling more flexible.
- Deep Breathing
Sometimes, all you need is a moment to breathe. Take a few deep, slow breaths in and out. It will help calm your mind, reduce stress, and reset your focus.
