When was the last time you intentionally did something that scared you? I’m talking about that kind of fear where you drive to an unfamiliar place at night, convinced you’ll get lost. Or taking your first ski run down a steep slope in your 30s. Maybe it’s the nerve-wracking experience of striking up a conversation with a complete stranger in an elevator.

Most of us tend to shy away from things that scare us, and that’s unfortunate. The truth is, doing something that scares you every day is one of the five surprising habits that can dramatically improve your happiness.

In fact, it’s one of 42 habits I’ve discovered that can shift your life for the better – but since I don’t have room to dive into all of them here, let me share a few of my favorites.

If you want to be happier, start actively seeking out opportunities to do something that scares you. And when you do, you’ll not only be taking my advice but also the wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt, who once said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” You’ll know when you’re scared. The key is to recognize it, acknowledge it, and then push yourself to do it anyway. For me, one of my most fear-conquering moments was taking a 500-foot plunge in a bungee jump. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once. So, what scares you?

Here are four more happiness habits worth trying:

  1. Take the “im” out of Impossible – at Least Once a Year
We all have a list of things that seem “impossible” for us. Make one. Put it up on your wall. Then, choose one thing each year to cross off that list and watch as your sense of what’s possible expands. For example, running a marathon used to seem completely out of reach for me. But as someone who’s more of a walker than a runner, I was still able to finish my first marathon – six hours and nine minutes later! The real triumph was that I did it at all. What’s one thing you would love to conquer?
  2. Make a List of 100 Things You Want to Do Before You Die
Start right now. Jot down everything you want to experience before your time is up. Each year, aim to check something off your list – and do it on your birthday for an extra sense of celebration. Review the list once a year and add new things as your dreams evolve. Keep a journal of your adventures and take a photo each time you check off something big. What’s one thing you can add to your list?
  3. Celebrate One Success Every Single Day
At the end of each day, make sure you celebrate something you’ve accomplished – even if it’s as simple as brushing your teeth. It doesn’t matter how small, what matters is that you give yourself credit for it. And don’t hold back! Go ahead and get as enthusiastic as you want – it’s important to let yourself fully savor the wins. What success can you celebrate today?
  4. Carry a List of Everything You’re Grateful For
Take some time to jot down everything that makes you feel grateful – your health, your relationships, a good meal, anything that brings you joy. Add to the list as often as possible, especially on tough days. Read it when you need a pick-me-up. Better yet, record it in your own voice and listen to it while you’re driving or working out. What’s on your gratitude list?

As for me, I’m truly grateful to you for reading this and allowing me the opportunity to share these ideas with you. I hope they inspire you to live a fuller, more joyful life.
